Arkikosa

Teatro Dallas invited proposals from Dallas area artists to envision alternative monuments in Dallas public spaces in need of racial and cultural healing. Curated by Sara Cardona and Giovanni Valderas.

Arkikosa River is a future monument in relation to Dallas and memory. Long before Spanish explorers and settler colonialism, the river was called Arkikosa by the Hasani people, kindred of the Caddo. By restoring the river’s ancestral name, this monument challenges the national consensual narrative of discovery and settler colonialism. By embracing the complete history, we are acknowledging the genocide of Native Americans and can begin the journey to the whole truth.
